Beijing-based artist Liu Wei graduated from the Chinese Academy of Art in 1996. He is strongly influenced by the instability and fluctuations of 21st century China, particularly in terms of the country’s physical and intellectual landscape. Liu was part of a generation of artists known as the Post-Sensitivity group. Since then, Liu has become a singular presence on the global art scene for works spanning various media, including installations, video, drawing, painting, digital design and sculpture, as well as for his use of unconventional materials and forms. Liu Wei was awarded the Chinese Contemporary Art Prize for Best Artist in 2008 and the Art China Prize in 2016.
In Beijing, Somexing took shots of the artist Liu Wei in his studio in the midst of his creative process and photographs of the work created for Hennessy: ‘Spring’1. In this work, he expresses constancy and know-how. During a trip to Cognac, the artist discovered the art of cognac making and the subtlety of the aromas and flavours, giving way to a great creation. For the Master Blender, it’s all about exploring the unknown and taking nothing for granted. In this work, the artist has used a vast palette of colours, reflecting, for him, the palette of eaux-de-vie used by the tasting committee at Hennessy to blend its cognacs.
