Piece of Rose n°1 by Jiayi Liu
For her collaboration with Maison Margiela, Somexing Artistic curated an artistic commission with textile artist Jiayi Liu. It is rooted in material, memory, and emotion. At its center stands the rose, a timeless symbol of love and a recurring motif in contemporary artistic collaborations.
Through this commission, the gesture itself carries meaning. The cycle of deconstruction and reconstruction at the heart of Jiayi Liu’s practice. It resonates with the DNA of Maison Margiela, where fragmentation, transformation, and reassembly shape both form and narrative. Here, process takes shape as language.
In this way, the project reflects Somexing Artistic’s curatorial approach to brand and artist collaborations. Art opens a space for connection, while craft becomes a language. Piece of Rose n°1
Entitled Piece of Rose n°1, the artwork by Jiayi Liu unfolds as a woven silk tapestry where image, material, and time intersect. Beginning with the photograph of a rose, the artist transfers a fleeting moment onto raw silk, transforming the image into a fragile surface charged with memory.
Subsequently, the work enters a phase of deconstruction. Jiayi Liu cuts the silk into long threads and carefully reweaves them, allowing the rose to slowly reappear through touch and duration. Framed by a red thread border, the composition holds the image in tension, oscillating between presence and absence, structure and emotion.
This time-based process echoes the way memory takes shape. Some moments fade, while others persist. Through weaving, Jiayi Liu brings together the instant of photography and the slowness of textile craft, revealing a dialogue between fluid remembrance and lasting feeling.
Through Somexing Artistic’s curatorial vision, Piece of Rose n°1 extends beyond the image to become a sensory experience. Each intersection of silk records a gesture, a trace, a transformation. Ultimately, the work stands as a contemporary meditation on love and memory, where material, process, and emotion interlace into a single, enduring form.

Contemporary multidisciplinary artist burned in China, Jiayi Liu graduated from the Royal College of Art in London. Her practice encompasses photography, video, publishing, and craft. Drawing from personal experiences and family histories, she explores themes of intimacy, familial bonds, and identity. Her work delicately weaves together private narratives and shared cultural memories, creating spaces that radiate warmth and emotional resonance. Through a precise attention to detail and materiality, she develops narratives that invite viewers into quiet, immersive encounters.
