About the artist
Born in 1987 in Shanghai. Zhang Guangyu lives and works in Shanghai. He graduated from Central Saint Martins with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2012. He started his career exploring ink textures and colours through digital and printing techniques producing limited editions pigment print on fine art paper. Today, he is also making large scale oil and acrylic paintings and develops 3D animations of his works.
Zhang’s works are saturated and densely layered portals that teeter between kaleidoscopic abstractions and surreal landscapes. His work presents the aesthetic impression produced by fusion of strong contrast elements, like the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, geometry and blur, classical and contemporary art.
To celebrate the 2019 Chinese Lunar New Year, Hennessy cognac collaborated with emerging Chinese artist Guangyu Zhang to create the design for the limited-edition Hennessy VSOP Privilege. For the Year of the Pig, the artist has created an incredible digital collage symbolizing the cyclical nature of life and all that is attributed during the Chinese New Year. Adorned with different symbols representing heaven and earth, as well as past and present, it is a multi-dimensional work of art. The circles inside the work represent fulfillment and completion, and the other two circles around it represent Hennessy’s famous double distillation process. Zhang is the perfect figure to bridge East and West through a collaboration for Hennessy Chinese New Year 2019 cognac.
